Even though it’s a standard retail practice, we still get a little disoriented when we walk through the stores in July and see winter merchandise. The early fall collections the stores bring in are meant to whet our appetite. The fashion engine is always driven by what’s coming next. Here are 5 new directions for Fall 2011
Denim. It’s never been far out of favor. Denim jeans and jackets are staples but this fall denim will be a featured fabric in more dressed up styles like trousers, tailors suits and accessories like shoes and bags. Remember bib overalls? They’re back too. But if you’ve not a starving student, a house painter, or a car mechanic, take a pass on the overalls.
Boy Chic. Androgyny has a certain appeal that is always striking on people like Tilda Swinton. To pull off a total androgynous look successfully requires the right hair, makeup ad attitude. On the other hand, borrowing from the boys is an option that can boost anyone’s wardrobe. There’s always a place for a perfectly tailored pair of trousers.
Mad Men Mod. Mad Men still has a hold on fashion even though we have another year to wait for the next season to air. The fashion industry is betting that the Mad women will be wearing iconic 60s wardrobes like double breasted pea coats, classic shift dresses, and cleaned up suits a la Jackie Kennedy. We’ll take that! It looks smashing when it’s done right.
SPARKLE!!! Embellishment, rhinestones, and glitz. The stores will look like they’ve been hosed down with a glitter gun. Can’t wait for this one. Nothing makes a girl smile like sequins!
Dark. Stormy. Kinky. This is the influence of the late Alexander McQueen. The McQueen Retrospective currently running at the Metropolitan Museum is drawing such record crowds the museum had to increase their opening hours. His inner darkness was legendary and his talent was huge. He was the king of extremes, one of which was his sharply tailored looks in notoriously odd and unexpected mixes of fabrics and materials. His influences will be widely copied this season.

You’re right, Mary, it is disconcerting to see the Fall styles in the stores already. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to (or like!) that. That said, this little hint of what’s to come is very intriguing and fun. Thank you!
Yes Ginger, This fall’s colors appear to be your dream colors!
