How much do you really want to know about your lipstick?
Have you avoided taking a toxic tour of your cosmetics bag because you’d risk almost anything rather than face your naked face?
On an average day, we use 25 products on our skin, with over 200 ingredients. Unlike prescription drugs, vaccines and medical devices, the Food and Drug Administration does not regulate the ingredients found in cosmetics.
Fortunately, there are plenty of safe alternatives to pallid lips and unpolished nails. The Campaign For Safe Cosmetics tracks and tests over 14,000 products from almost 1000 brands. The results are published in The Skin Deep Report, a searchable data base that features brand-by-brand safety rankings and information on each product.
To see how your favorite products rate, go to The Skin Deep Report and enter the name of the product. If it’s been tested, you’ll find a rating from 1 (low hazard) to 10 (high hazard). If you find disappointingly high numbers, use the site to shop for safer alternatives. There are a lot of surprises on the list, in terms of household names: both safe and unsafe.
